How much do families pay?
Is Ronald McDonald House Auckland part of Starship?
How is Ronald McDonald House Auckland funded?
How is McDonald's involved with Ronald McDonald House Auckland?
What is Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand?
Who operates Ronald McDonald House Auckland?
Ronald McDonald House Auckland
(RMHA) is a charity;
our three facilities
are operated by the Ronald McDonald House Auckland Trust, a charitable trust registered with the New Zealand Charities Commission. Our Charities Commission registration number is CC23591.
Who can stay?
We
run accommodation facilities
for the families of children who have been admitted to Starship for specialist paediatric care. We provide practical assistance to non-local families who require shelter for the duration that their child is in hospital, who otherwise would be burdened with finding (and paying for) hotel/motel accommodation.
Despite being based in Auckland, we have a national scope and our charity supports
families from all over New Zealand
. In fact, the majority of families who stay in our House are from outside of Auckland.
Those families who do live closer but need to remain on the ward with their critically ill child, can stay at the
Ronald McDonald Family Room
crisis accommodation so that they are never more than a minute away from their child.
How much do families pay?
Nothing - our service is free for everyone. Our objective is to alleviate the practical, emotional and financial burdens of the families who need to travel to Auckland with their critically ill or disabled child. By providing accommodation free of charge, as well as our
additional support programmes
, we can ensure that a family can focus on the well being of their child rather than the practicalities of finding accommodation etc.
Is Ronald McDonald House Auckland part of Starship?
Our mission is to accommodate and support the families of the children who have been admitted to Starship, so we are naturally aligned with the operations of Starship. However, we are completely separate charities, with completely different missions, operations and funding.
Whilst Starship is focused on the medical needs of the child through their hospital facilities,
Ronald McDonald House Auckland
is focused on the practical and emotional needs of the child’s family through our
accommodation facilities
. So in essence, Starship takes care of the child and Ronald McDonald House Auckland takes care of the family.
How is Ronald McDonald House Auckland funded?
Fundraising Programme
As with all charities, our
fundraising programme
is essential in helping us raise the money required to provide the House and its quality services free of charge. Thanks to the generosity of
our supporters
in the Kiwi community, the majority of our operational funds are raised from our key stakeholders, individuals, community groups and businesses.
Ministry of Health Subsidies
Some families are eligible for an accommodation subsidy from the Ministry of Health (providing they meet certain criteria and that they live more than 100 kilometres from their treatment centre). This subsidy does not cover the full cost of a family’s stay nor is every family who stays with us eligible. Overall the subsidies account for approximately 40% of our operating budget.
How is McDonald's involved with Ronald McDonald House Auckland?
McDonalds and Ronald McDonald House Auckland
Contrary to many assumptions about our House, the McDonalds Corporation is not involved with the management and day-to-day running of
Ronald McDonald House Auckland
, nor is the House fully funded by McDonalds.
Local McDonald's franchisees generously contribute to the annual operating costs of our House. We receive an operational grant each year from Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand (the philanthropic arm of McDonalds), which they raise through McDonald’s restaurants and their wider fundraising programme. Overall, we receive approximately 10% of our operational costs from the McDonalds community and are extremely grateful for their generosity.
History of McDonalds Corporation and Ronald McDonald House movement
The McDonalds Corporation have had an association with the movement from the outset, being instrumental in the set up of the first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia back in 1974. The McDonald’s Corporation then went on to set up Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) with charitable chapters throughout the world. RMHC is the philanthropic arm of McDonalds raising funds through, for example McDonalds Restaurant collection boxes, to contribute to the operational costs of Ronald McDonald Houses around the world.
What is Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand?
Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand (RMHCNZ) is the New Zealand chapter of the global RMHC movement which are the philanthropic arm of the McDonalds Corporation. RMHCNZ was instrumental in establishing Ronald McDonald House Auckland and we do include RMHC representatives on our Board. However,
Ronald McDonald House Auckland
is a completely separate charity with its own separate constitution.
Funds raised through New Zealand McDonalds restaurants are managed by RMHC and then distributed amongst Ronald McDonald House programmes in New Zealand including Ronald McDonald House Auckland where RMHCNZ generously provides an annual operational grant.
